Pep Guardiola's team needs only three points to be crowned champion but will win the title if the second Manchester United loses to West Brom Sunday or Bournemouth Wednesday.

It was a victory for City's morale after the disappointment of Tuesday's loss to Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Despite the full dominance of the first half, Tottenham returned to the competition, before Raheem Sterling scored the third decisive goal for City.

Gabriel Jesus gave the advantage to City in the 22nd minute, sailing Vincent Kompany's long ball past Hugo Lloris.

Barely three minutes later, the French goalkeeper conceded a penalty kick with a slippery target shot on Sterling, though the replays suggested it was outside the box. Ilkay Gundogan moved from the place to City advantage.

Against the course of the game, Christian Eriksen cut the deficit by half. Drawing on Harry Kane's ball, his ricochet shot Aymeric Laporte, then back from the Dane and in the past Ederson.

After the break, City resisted a period of sustained pressure from Spurs, before Sterling hit the rebound of Jesus' shot to get the three points in the 72nd minute.

He inflicted Spurs' first defeat in the league since his 4-1 defeat at City on Dec. 16, ending a run of 14 games without defeat.

Mauricio Pochettino's team remains fourth with six points ahead of Chelsea in fifth.
